Bring Me The Horizon and BABYMETAL discuss their special "collaboration"

ーOli, when I asked BABYMETAL about their overseas tour in the first half of 2023, MOAMETAL said there was a younger audience than ever before, particularly outside of Japan. And she felt like maybe BABYMETAL was a band that the younger audiences were starting to look up to. In a recent interview, you also said that you’ve noticed younger audiences who have perhaps discovered you through social media like TikTok. What do you want the younger generation of audiences to take away from your music?

Oli: I guess for a new generation of people, Bring Me The Horizon could be their first show ever. So I think it's so important that we show them a sense of community. I think sometimes you can see one of our shows, or any kind of rock or metal shows, and maybe it looks a little scary but actually, I think people into rock music, and especially our fans, are the nicest, most welcoming people you’ll ever meet. And I think now, with the internet and social media and everything, people are quite isolated. Even though the majority of people are quite addicted to that world, and a lot of people bond over that, I think there are a lot of kids who are like how I felt as a kid, that just didn't fit in with that kind of mainstream, what everyone else is doing. I never understood all the things that were popular at school.

I always felt like an outcast and I think that must be an even stronger problem now for some kids who don't get what's popular. So I think music and rock music and shows and this way of life is such a good outlet for those people. Because I think it's a world where, rather than trying to avoid our problems or run away or escape, our songs really deal with darker themes and deal with depression and sadness, and everything that people don't like to talk about too much. The average person might not want to talk about these kinds of things, but we think it's important and we feel like it's the best way to overcome feeling sad or lonely or lost or scared or anything. I think these emotions will get better if you deal with them and look at them and I hope that's why our music helps us to speak to a younger generation yet again because I think there's a lot of people out there that need this.

MOAMETAL: What I have been thinking lately is that many people, not just the younger generation, are looking for the right answer but we don’t want to tell people how to feel. We're very excited that people are discovering us through social media like TikTok and, as the age range of our fans expands, and we become a bigger community, whether people are looking for meaning or just fun, if our music can bring something to our fans, that's enough for me. I hope we can do something fun with everyone.

ーLastly, I think it is fair to say that you are "kindred spirits" but is there anything you would like to say to each other or convey?

Oli: Thanks a lot and we'll see you next year, we'll miss you.

SU-METAL: Thank you for letting us be a part of NEX_FEST, we really enjoyed the show and collaborating on “Kingslayer (feat. BABYMETAL)” together and we really enjoyed getting to know new bands. I think Bring Me The Horizon is a band that is opening up new worlds, so I will continue to be a fan and do what I can while looking up to you. I am also very happy to be able to say that we’re friends!

MOMOMETAL: After meeting you for the first time and seeing you perform live for the first time, I was completely captivated and instantly became a fan! I will be listening to many, many more Bring Me The Horizon songs and I can’t wait to work together again in the future!

MOAMETAL: Can we do NEX_FEST every year? (laughs)

Oli: Haha that would be cool, yeah.
